Duties and Responsibilities
The Billing Specialist performs the following duties as assigned.
Ensures all encounters are accounted for.
Review each encounter for accuracy.
Applies appropriate CPT & ICD-10 codes to encounter.
Review each patient account prior to input to ensure that patient account represents accurate payer source.
Answers patients’ questions concerning billing & corrects billing as needed.
Performs demographic data entry when possible.
Responds to patient telephone calls regarding account balances.
Researches aging analysis report to determine if unpaid claims must be re-filed or adjusted.
Takes necessary steps to ensure collection on unpaid claims. (Re-file, appeal, make corrections, etc.).
Conducts collection activities from patients, carriers or recommends account balance write off.
Immediately researches correspondence from carriers requesting a refund and provides information to Accounting Manager.
Processes refund to carriers after obtaining approval and instructions from Accounting Manager.
Reviews Daily Deposit to ensure accuracy and makes necessary corrections to logs.
Applies all payments received by mail to appropriate patient accounts.
Demonstrating flexibility, enthusiasm and willingness to cooperate while working with others in assigned inter-professional care teams to support PCMH programmatic activities.
Participate in population management activities, as directed.
Assist the care team by helping to measure quality and identify, refine and implement practice improvements that support the medical home, and assist in performance evaluation and quality improvement.
Apply the principles of comprehensive, community-based, patient-centered, developmentally appropriate, and culturally and linguistically sensitive care.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required
Computer experience, typing and ability to operate calculator.
Possess the ability to work productively, either independently or with other individuals.
Possess the ability to plan and execute work projects.
Be able to function in emergency situations.
Preferred
Knowledge of federal, state and non-governmental sourced insurances desirable.
Knowledge of medical insurance billing.
Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred but not required.
Credentials and Experience
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
Special Requirements
The employee must be able to lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination. Requires sitting, standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. This position does not require frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to work with a moderate noise level in the work environment is required.
