We know Medicaid can be confusing—whether you're applying for the first time, renewing your coverage, or thinking about switching providers. That’s why we’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions we hear from patients. If you don’t see your question listed, our team is always happy to help in person, over the phone, or during one of our Medicaid Help Days.

  • Medicaid is a state and federal program that helps cover medical costs for people with limited income and resources. It may also offer benefits not normally covered by Medicare, like dental, vision, and transportation.

  • You may qualify if you are:

    • Pregnant

    • A child or teenager under 19

    • A parent or caretaker of a child

    • An adult over 65

    • An adult with a disability
      Eligibility is based on income and household size.

  • You can apply:

  • You’ll usually need:

    • Proof of income (pay stubs or a letter from employer)

    • Social Security number or immigration documents

    • Proof of identity (like a driver’s license or ID)

    • Proof of Texas residency (like a utility bill)

  • Yes! Our clinic has staff in our Outreach department who can help you apply or renew your Medicaid coverage. Just ask during your visit or call us for an appointment.

  • Coverage includes:

    • Doctor visits

    • Lab tests and X-rays

    • Hospital care

    • Prescription medications

    • Mental health services

    • Preventive care and screenings

    • Dental and vision care for children

  • Yes, we proudly accept Medicaid, including STAR, CHIP and Texas Healthy Women plans

  • Call the number on the back of your Medicaid card and ask to change your PCP to La Esperanza Clinic. You can also visit YourTexasBenefits.com and make the change online. Need help? Our team can walk you through it.

  • Yes. We offer services on a sliding fee scale based on your income. We believe everyone deserves access to care.

  • Yes. Medicaid coverage must be renewed every year. Watch for renewal letters or reminders and respond promptly to avoid losing coverage.

  • We can help you reapply or explore other coverage options. Call or visit us for assistance.

  • CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) is similar to Medicaid but for children in families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid. We accept both CHIP and Medicaid.

  • Undocumented individuals generally do not qualify for full Medicaid. However, they may be eligible for emergency Medicaid or receive services through our sliding fee scale.
